Stranmillis University College - Chair of Governing Body
The Department for Employment and Learning invites applications from individuals interested in serving as Chair of the Governing Body of Stranmillis University College. Applicants should be or have been engaged or employed in business, industry or any profession, within the public, private or voluntary sector. The appointee will take up their posting in April/May 2013.
Stranmillis offers teacher training for the primary and secondary school sectors as well as a BA in Early Childhood Studies and a BSc in Health & Leisure.
The Governing Body is responsible for overseeing the College’s activities, achievement of its mission, and compliance with its framework of governance and the Financial Memorandum under which funding is received from the Department.
While the post is not remunerated, allowances are payable at Northern Ireland Civil Service rates for travel and subsistence costs necessarily incurred on official business. The Chair will be expected to be available for at least six meetings a year which will mainly be held on the College campus on the Stranmillis Road, Belfast.

Desirable Criteria
If, following assessment of the essential criteria, the applicant pool is deemed too large, the Panel will apply the first desirable criterion. If there is a need to shortlist further, the second and third desirable criterion will be applied in that order.
- Previous experience as a Chair of a Governing Body, Board, Committee or similar, ideally in a public funded organisation, within the last 10 years
- A strong interest in vocationally-orientated programmes, including those in the area of teacher education
- Management experience in the business or educational sector at a senior level
Candidates will be expected to demonstrate how they meet the essential criteria outlined above. If it is deemed necessary to create a shortlist for interview, the desirable criteria will be applied. In addition to shortlisting, the information provided may be used to support your application if you are successful at interview and your name is presented to the Minister as a candidate suitable for selection.
