Public consultation on a proposal to increase paid holiday entitlement
Summary:
The Working Time Regulations (Northern Ireland) 1998 gave workers a statutory right to four weeks’ paid holiday for the first time. Yet some, particularly the lowest paid, have to include time taken off on bank and public holidays against their annual holiday entitlement. This is unfair, and the Government is committed to ending this anomaly by increasing paid holiday entitlement. This consultation seeks views on how that objective can be achieved. In particular, it considers the benefits and impacts of the proposals, and asks for views on flexibilities that both staff and businesses may find helpful to enable them to make best use of their holiday entitlement. Responses to the consultation are sought by 19 October 2006.
