PROPOSAL TO AMEND THE EUROPEAN WORKS COUNCIL DIRECTIVE

Summary:

A UK-wide consultation on the Proposal to Amend the European Works Council Directive has been launched by the Department for Business Enterprise and Regulatory Reform (BERR).  DEL is ensuring that Northern Ireland consultees have the opportunity to provide their views.  The consultation seeks your views on a proposal to recast Council Directive 94/45/EC on the establishment of a European Works Council or a procedure in Community scale undertakings for the purposes of informing and consulting employees.  The Directive sets out requirements for informing and consulting employees at the European level in undertakings or groups of undertakings with at least 1,000 employees across member states of the European Economic Area (EEA) and at least 150 employees in each of two or more of those member states.  The mechanism for informing and consulting employees is a European Works Council.  Responses before 6 October 2008.

The BERR consultation on the Proposal to Amend the European Works Council Directive has now closed.  BERR are currently considering responses.  It is anticipated that a response to this Consultation will issue within 3 months.  A link will be provided to this when available.
