Where can I study?

In Northern Ireland the HE sector consists of three well respected universities – Queen's University external link, Belfast, the University of Ulster external link and the Open University external link (a UK wide distance learning centre now offering its courses internationally) – and two University Colleges, Stranmillis University College external link and St Mary's University College external link.

The three Universities have a student population of some 48,000, with more than 2,000 at the University Colleges.

Northern Ireland’s six Colleges of Further and Higher Education have an equally vital role to play. They offer a wide range of HE courses and there are over 12,000 students undertaking HE courses in Colleges of Further & Higher Education in NI.In addition, there are over 700 Colleges and Universities in the rest of the UK offering over 60,000 courses. So you can be pretty confident that somewhere out there is the course for you!

  • Hero external link: provides a map of all UK Universities and Colleges that provide Higher Education. By clicking on the place you are interested in, the site provides you with general background information such as details on courses available, accommodation, research interests, etc, as well as a direct link to that establishment’s specific website.
  • UCAS external link: provides a link entitled "universities and colleges information". Click on this will take you to an alphabetical listing of all UK Universities and Colleges. Find the establishment you are looking for, click on it and you will be taken direct to that establishment’s own website for more detailed information.

What can I study?

There are a number of websites that provide details of available HE courses. The following are examples of websites you will find useful:

  • The Course Source external link: offers comprehensive coverage of all UK degree courses which students can search by a variety of options depending on their needs.
  • Hotcourses external link: can be used to search and apply for HE courses in the UK.
  • UK Course Finder external link: allows you to search for a course either by subject or University or College.
  • UCAS external link: Universities and Colleges Admissions Service - this link takes you to the course search page on the UCAS site. Select "undergraduate course search" and you will be taken to an alphabetical listing of all courses available.
