What is a Foundation Degree?
A Foundation Degree is a higher education qualification which combines academic and work-related learning. It is broadly equivalent to a HND/HNC qualification and can be studied in a wide range of subject areas. The Foundation Degree focuses on employability. A person will learn the technical skills and academic knowledge which will transfer easily into the workplace. In Northern Ireland, Foundation Degrees are developed and delivered in a partnership, involving one of the Northern Ireland universities or the Open University, a Further Education college and employers.
Who can study for a Foundation Degree?
A Foundation Degree is suitable for school leavers who want a job-specific higher education qualification, for employees who want to improve their skills and prospects in their current job or for people who want to retrain in a new area.
Where can you study for a Foundation Degree?
All six Further Education regional colleges in Northern Ireland offer Foundation Degrees, in a range of subjects. In addition, Foundation Degree courses are also available through the College of Agriculture, Food and Rural Enterprise.
What qualifications are needed to study for a Foundation Degree?
The entry requirements will normally be stated in terms of A-Levels and GCSEs but this can be flexible. Applicants without formal qualifications, who can demonstrate they have the relevant skills and aptitudes, may also be considered.
How long does it take to complete a Foundation Degree?
A Foundation Degree takes two years to complete full-time. An employee studying part-time will take longer.
