Recurrent research funding
The purpose of recurrent research funding in Northern Ireland is to enable the universities to make successful applications for project funding from other funding sources, including the seven UK Research Councils
, charities, industry, government departments and the EU.
Recurrent research funding in Northern Ireland is distributed in different ways. The majority (95%) is distributed by reference to quality, as assessed by performance in the most recent Research Assessment Exercise, and volume of activity. This is known as Quality-related Research (QR) funding. Further details of allocations and the methodology are available here.
Funding is also distributed to areas of regional significance through the Strategic Priority Fund, while support for overseas research students is provided through the Overseas Research Students Awards Scheme (ORSAS).
