How do I apply for an award for Postgraduate Study in Northern Ireland?

If you wish to apply for a studentship to pursue postgraduate study in Northern Ireland (at either Queen's University Belfast or the University of Ulster) you should apply to the university for an application form. You must apply for a place on the course and for an award.

The offer of a place does not mean that funding will be provided.

  • Contact your chosen university department in December/January about a place.
  • Application forms for awards are usually available from March, and should be returned to the academic department of the institution in time for its closing date.
  • Northern Ireland institutions closing dates are in mid May. You should check this date with your chosen institution.
  • Successful applicants will be notified of the outcome in July/August.

How do I apply for an award for Postgraduate Study in Great Britain?

Northern Ireland students wishing to apply for a studentship tenable at an institution in Great Britain must approach the appropriate academic department at the institution(s) and enquire about:-

  • obtaining a place for your chosen course of study; and
  • the procedure for applying for an award from one or more of the following bodies:-
    • The Arts and Humanities Research Board
    • Economic and Social Research Council
    • Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council
    • Natural Environment Research Council
    • Medical Research Council
    • Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council
    • Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food
    • Science and Technology Facilities Council

The institutions will advise you of the date by which application forms will be available for the body which support your chosen course, the closing date for receipt of applications, and the date by which applicants will be advised of the outcome.
