The McAvoy Group Ltd

Looking truly spectacular after their success at the National Training Awards Damien Canavan, Operations Director and Anne Watson, HR Manager, The McAvoy Group Ltd.

The McAvoy Group, which design and make steel and timber-framed buildings, went on a ‘Journey to Excellence’ and changed its culture in creating a team approach to manufacturing and business improvement.

They wanted to expand their anti-vandal product to meet demand, but at the same time customers were asking for shorter lead times and higher quality. Following detailed research they decided to relocate to a new state of the art plant in Lisburn and create a new way of working.

Journey to Excellence (J2X) was a ‘whole team’ training approach introduced to ensure a smooth and successful relocation and to help the business achieve its expansion and improvement goals. Between June 2004 and November last year, 59 people were trained including many relocated staff and new recruits.

J2X involved 765 man-days of training at a cost of £28,500 which helped improve its production flow; increased production efficiency and halved lead times. Its pay structure now rewards team performance rather than individual performance.

In all 70 per cent of employees have had business improvement training and 36 people have been involved in 15 improvement projects, which have saved McAvoy time and money. Employees gained nationally recognised qualifications – 41 gained NVQ level two in engineering production and 45 achieved business improvement units.
