Upper Bann Institute and Express Parcels

Speeding their way to success after collecting National Training Award L–R Jim Crooks, Director, Upper Bann Institute, Elizabeth Greer, Trainer, Upper Bann Institute, Lynne Brown, HR Manager, Express Parcels.

In 2003 Express Parcels wanted to introduce change management strategies to help increase its market share and improve staff performance. The company was facing a number of challenges common throughout the industry. These included driver retention, turnover of manual staff, and absenteeism levels on certain shifts above the Company average. They also needed to address profitability on some delivery routes and control and reduce costs associated with insurance claims.

Middle managers were challenged through having to “get the job done” and maintain a professional level of customer service response, while facing these challenges.  They did not feel empowered to change the situations they found themselves in.

They approached Upper Bann Institute’s Training Direct Unit who delivered a tailored training programme for 10 middle managers based around the Institute of Leadership & Management ‘Introduction to Management’ qualification. This covered managing change, problem-solving, team-building, communications, motivation of staff, stress reduction and delegation.

Seven managers completed the training and as a result they rarely need to involve senior managers in operational issues. Within four months of completing the training they were able to make a major contribution in, for example, reducing the use of agency staff. Staff turnover, absenteeism and insurance claim levels were also significantly reduced.
