Biodiversity
Biodiversity (lead Department – DOE)
The Sustainable Development Strategy has Biodiversity as a key component. Biodiversity” literally means the whole variety of life on earth. It is not only the impact on each single plant and animal that is important – it is also the affects that destroying one can have on the connections and relationships between them all.
There is agreement at an international level that more must be done to protect and preserve our natural world. Everyone, including Government, can play a part in making a difference.
DEL's Involvement
DEL’s influence is limited. In terms of new buildings, the Department has encouraged delivery partners eg Colleges and Universities to focus on sustainable construction and landscaping. The Department will also continue to work with relevant Sector Skills Councils to ensure that the supply side of education and training responds appropriately to identified needs, including biodiversity-related employment opportunities.
