Carbon Reduction
Carbon Reduction (lead Department – DOE)
Carbon Reduction Commitment Scheme (CRC) aims to cut carbon emissions from large commercial and public sector organisations. It covers around 10% of the UK economy-wide emissions and will provide incentives for organisations to save money through energy efficiency.
The Carbon Reduction Commitment (CRC) is a UK-wide scheme (including Northern Ireland) and targets organisations with electricity consumption in excess of £500,000, eg supermarkets, banks, Government and other large office buildings. This initiative contributes to the overarching Sustainable Development” strategy.
DEL's Involvement
While DEL itself is not a high consumer and does not breach the £500,000 threshold, all NI & UK central departments are mandated participants. In other words, although DEL's usage does not meet the required threshold, there is a requirement that we would join up with other Department(s) so that jointly, we would meet the criteria.
The Department has also been raising awareness with its delivery partners. For example, some Colleges and Universities may spend more than the £500,000 annual threshold.
