Care Matters
Care Leavers (lead Department – DHSSPS)
The 10 year strategy for children and young people, “Our Children and Young People – Our Pledge”, outlines challenges facing children and young people across a broad spectrum of issues and takes into account the role of parents and families. In terms of education and training achievement “looked after” children fare less well than their peers. With this in mind, the strategy for young people in care, “Care Matters in NI”, outlines a vision for wide-ranging improvements in services to children and young people in or leaving care.
DEL’s involvement
For this reason the Department has placed a high priority on addressing the needs of these vulnerable young people. DEL’s Careers Service and the Health Trusts work together to ensure that these vulnerable young people have access to the right advice about their future.
The Department has also been attempting to make its business partners aware of the particular needs of those with experience of care and also that, where possible, flexibilities are built into programmes to take account of these needs
