Neighbourhood Renewal

Neighbourhood Renewal (lead Department – DSD)

The Strategy, People and Place – A strategy for Neighbourhood Renewal” seeks to target those communities throughout Northern Ireland who are suffering the highest levels of deprivation. It is also about bringing together the work of all Government Departments in partnership with local people to tackle disadvantage and deprivation in all aspects of everyday life.

DEL's Involvement

One of DEL’s main aims is to improve the life chances of those in our society who are excluded.  DEL’s programmes aim to assist workless people to find jobs, either directly or through helping them to gain the skills necessary to improve their chances in the labour market.  Although assistance is targeted towards the individual - regardless of where they might live – there is more of an impact on Neighbourhood Renewal communities where joblessness is high.  An examples of DEL's offering which impacts on individuals in deprived areas is LEMIS (the Local Employment Intermediary Service).

LEMIS provides tailored assistance to help voluntary clients overcome the personal barriers that are preventing them from finding and keeping a job. The service, which is independent of the statutory employment services and is run by and in the community, is designed to complement the services available through the Jobs and Benefits offices in the areas being targeted i.e Belfast, Londonderry and Strabane. These are areas of high unemployment/low employment and have been identified using the latest version of the Noble Indices of Multiple Deprivation.
