Language (lead Department – DCAL)
In addition to English, many other languages are used in Northern Ireland, including indigenous minority languages (Irish and Ulster-Scots), minority ethnic languages (such as Cantonese, Portuguese and Arabic) and British and Irish Sign Languages.
Irish and Ulster-Scots is promoted in order to safeguard them as an important part of our shared cultural heritage. Both these languages are recognised by the UK Government under the European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages”.
DEL's Involvement
DEL fully recognises the importance of using Irish and Ulster Scots as an expression of cultural wealth and this is evidenced by the Codes of Courtesy in place for the conduct of business. As Irish is at a more advanced stage of development, education and training is available in a number of institutions and at a number of levels. The Department also facilitates the use of a range of other languages by providing translation and interpretation services at no cost to the individual.
