Investing for Health

Investing for Health (lead Department – DHSSPS)

The “Investing for Health Strategy” is NI’s public health framework for action to improve health and well-being in NI.  The key aims of the strategy are to improve life expectancy across the population and to reduce health inequalities. The Strategy has a particular focus on the most disadvantaged in Northern Ireland.

DEL's Involvement

DEL's role is very limited, other than in the context of the linkage between educational attainment and healthy living - "better educated, better health generally".  DEL contributes to the Strategy by ensuring that the population has the skills needed to support the modern economy.  DEL also supports innovation, research and development, including in the health field.  The universities, for example, are doing significant research into cancer and diabetes.

In addition, DEL’s Condition Management Programme (CMP) is delivered by Health Service partners and is designed to help people manage health conditions and disabilities in the context of work, thus helping them remain in, or find, employment.

A Healthy Promoting College pilot, launched in 2009 involves 2 Colleges working in partnership with the Public Health Agency and others on a three year programme as part of Phase One of a Health Promoting College Project.  The aim of the initiative is to improve the health and well-being of staff and students by promoting healthy lifestyles and reduce health inequalities through interventions in the College and to the wider community
