Alcohol and Drugs

Alcohol and Drugs (lead Department – DHSSPS)

The “Investing for Health” Strategy provides the framework for the Government’s approach to improving health and well-being and reducing health inequalities.  Alcohol and drug misuse remain significant public health issues, impacting on individuals, families, communities and the wider society.

DEL’s involvement

As with other health-related issues, DEL’s role in this area is limited.  However, DEL helps people develop their skills and assists them into work, thereby raising their self esteem and general well-being.  The Department has also been working with the Colleges and Universities in encouraging them to do all they can through pastoral care provision and counselling services to raise awareness of the health dangers caused by alcohol and drugs.

A Healthy Promoting College pilot, launched in 2009 involves 2 Colleges working in partnership with the Public Health Agency and others on a three year programme as part of Phase One of a Health Promoting College Project.  The aim of the initiative is to improve the health and well-being of staff and students by promoting healthy lifestyles and reduce health inequalities through interventions in the College and to the wider community.
