Domestic and Sexual Violence
Domestic and Sexual Violence (lead Department – DHSSPS)
The “Tackling Violence at Home” strategy sets out Government’s commitment to adopting a consistent and long-term approach to the prevention of domestic violence and an effective response where it occurs. It focuses on preventive measures and on the provision of better protection, justice and support services for victims and their children.
DEL’s involvement
As with many other health issues, DEL’s influence is limited, apart from the generally accepted view of the important contribution employment can make to general health and well-being.
Colleges and Universities have a direct interface with young people and DEL encourages these bodies to take part in promotional campaigns to help change their attitudes towards violence, making it less acceptable. In addition, the pastoral care and sign-posting service for victims, provided in Colleges and Universities, should not be under-estimated.
