Mental Health and Well-Being Strategy and Suicide Prevention (lead Department- DHSSPS)
The “Investing for Health” Strategy sets out how the health and well-being of all the people in Northern Ireland can be improved and how the unacceptable inequalities in health can be reduced. This set the scene for the Promoting Mental Health Strategy and “Protect Life”, the suicide prevention strategy, which contain actions designed to support mental and emotional well-being and reduce the suicide rate.
DEL’s involvement
DEL helps people develop their skills and assists them into work, thereby raising their self esteem and general feeling of well-being. It is in this context that DEL can contribute by helping improve employability, increase skills and educational attainment.
A Healthy Promoting College pilot, launched in 2009 involves 2 Colleges working in partnership with the Public Health Agency and others on a three year programme as part of Phase One of a Health Promoting College Project. The aim of the initiative is to improve the health and well-being of staff and students by promoting healthy lifestyles and reduce health inequalities through interventions in the College and to the wider community
In addition, Colleges and Universities have a direct interface with young people and provide help through their pastoral care arrangements which can signpost those in need of help to the appropriate expert resources.
