Sexual Health

Sexual Health (lead Department – DHSSPS)

The “Investing for Health” Strategy, provides the framework for improving health and wellbeing and reducing health inequalities.  It identifies sexual health as an important part of physical and mental health and emphasises that good personal relationships can promote health and wellbeing.  It also highlights that unsafe sex can lead to sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and unplanned pregnancies.

DEL’s involvement

As with many other health issues, DEL’s influence is limited, apart from the generally accepted view of the important contribution employment can make to general health and well-being.  As the issue is most relevant to young people, the role of Colleges and Universities in providing pastoral care to young people cannot be under-estimated.

A Healthy Promoting College pilot, launched in 2009 involves 2 Colleges working in partnership with the Public Health Agency and others on a three year programme as part of Phase One of a Health Promoting College Project.  The aim of the initiative is to improve the health and well-being of staff and students by promoting healthy lifestyles and reduce health inequalities through interventions in the College and to the wider community
