Tobacco (lead Department – DHSSPS)
The “Investing for Health” Strategy provides the framework for the Government’s approach to improving health and well-being and reducing health inequalities and identified smoking as a priority as it is the single greatest cause of premature death and avoidable illness.
DEL’s involvement
As with many other health issues, DEL’s influence is limited. However, the Department has been working with the Colleges and Universities in encouraging them to do all they can through pastoral care provision and counselling services to reduce the numbers of young people smoking. These institutions are also helping raise awareness of the health dangers caused by smoking, through eg poster campaigns etc.
A Healthy Promoting College pilot, launched in 2009 involves 2 Colleges working in partnership with the Public Health Agency and others on a three year programme as part of Phase One of a Health Promoting College Project. The aim of the initiative is to improve the health and well-being of staff and students by promoting healthy lifestyles and reduce health inequalities through interventions in the College and to the wider community
