Rural Strategy (lead Department – DARD)
The Rural Strategy addresses the issues and challenges specific to rural areas, arising in the period up to 2013. It links clearly to the strategic aims and objectives of EU rural development policy which will provide a significant part of the necessary legislative and budgetary underpinnings for its delivery.
DARD’s Strategic Plan 2006-2011 and the Regional Development Strategy -“Shaping our Future” are the overarching reference documents that provide a comprehensive policy framework for the development of Northern Ireland.
Because of its focus on the needs of the individual, DEL does not currently offer any specific programmes or services which are targeted at the rural community. This is also in keeping with its approach to urban dwellers. Some programmes concentrating on those from disadvantaged backgrounds may impact more on rural dwellers than others but are not specifically designed to do so.
