US Investment must provide us with real opportunities - Empey

Sunday 13 April 2008

Minister for Employment and Learning, Sir Reg Empey, today welcomed the announcement of $150 million to be invested in Northern Ireland.

He said: “This is a great opportunity for Northern Ireland and is recognition of the fact that we are developing a multi-skilled workforce. A lot of work has been going on behind the scenes for many years to persuade the major US pension funds that Northern Ireland is open for business.

“Our task, however, must be to ensure that there are real opportunities presented, and investments in particular which will improve our economic competitiveness. We must ensure that the projects will bring opportunities for the construction sectors and will leave a skills legacy in our workforce.

“We will work with the developers of the infrastructure projects as their plans develop and we look forward to talking to them about building on the local skills base and enhancing the local skills in the our economy.”
