Skills development essential to construction industry
11 March 2008
Employment and Learning Minister, Sir Reg Empey, has stressed that the future success of the local construction sector is dependent on the skills of its workforce.
The Minister was speaking today as he officially opened the Federation of Master Builders’ (FMB) new offices on the Malone Road, Belfast. He highlighted the importance of the Federation to the local construction industry and to the wider economy, and added: “Skills development is the cornerstone to the success of all sectors. The construction industry is no exception and in designating it as one of Northern Ireland’s priority skills areas, my Department has recognised this.
“Employers have a vital role to play in this process. Workforce development leads to better business performance and enhances our economic and social well-being.”
Established over 60 years ago to protect the interests of small and medium-sized building firms, the FMB is the largest trade association in the UK building industry and provides business planning and support to over 400 companies.
Sir Reg continued: “The FMB’s role in raising skills levels amongst its membership is invaluable. This is reflected in the high standards that membership of the Federation demands.
“The opening of the new office provides a focus for the Federation’s activities and underlines the services on offer to members and to customers alike.”
