Empey expresses concern at additional jobs blow for North West

29 July 2009

Employment Minister, Sir Reg Empey, has expressed his shock and concern over the redundancy announcement made today by Stream International.

The Minister said: “This is a very upsetting blow to those affected and my thoughts are with them and their families.  Whilst we have had no formal notification of the job losses from the company, I understand that they are significant and will, no doubt, have a knock-on effect on the local economy.

“The North West has already been badly hit by this global recession and this is a further distressing development.  I am aware that Invest NI is currently working with Stream management to try to secure new business to minimise the number of redundancies.  My officials from the Employment Service will be in contact with the company to offer our full range of services, including providing on-site redundancy clinics.”

Sir Reg continued: “We will do all that we can to lessen the difficulties that today’s announcement will bring to the individuals affected.  My Department will continue to provide support, advice and guidance to all those seeking employment and I would urge those who require information to contact the Department at www.delni.gov.uk external link in the first instance or visit www.nidirect.gov.uk external link.

“I intend to visit the Foyle Jobs and Benefits office on Friday and will be seeking meetings with local MLAs, members of the City Council and other involved parties.”
