Pupils told 'the future's bright for the ICT sector'
9 September 2009
Employment and Learning Minister, Sir Reg Empey, today urged young people about to make their university choices to choose a career in the ICT industry.
During a visit to an interactive ICT careers showcase at a University of Ulster ‘BringITon’ open day attended by around 1,000 year 12 students, the Minister underlined the importance of ICT to the development of Northern Ireland’s knowledge economy.
He said: “In the current economic climate it is more important than ever that young people make their career choices wisely. While it’s important to study a subject that you enjoy, it’s also prudent to have one eye to the career options which lie ahead.
“Choosing a course of study, such as computer science or software engineering, can offer both an enjoyable university experience and the prospect of a range of exciting career opportunities.”
Sir Reg continued: “Today’s students will enter a vastly different world by the time they graduate. Despite all the changes they will face, Northern Ireland’s economy will continue to need high quality graduates in these key disciplines. Choosing a career in ICT will position you to take advantage of this rising tide.”
The event was organised by Momentum, the Northern Ireland ICT Trade Federation, whose chief executive Dr Ian Graham said: “We’re delighted to be back at the universities for another year, given the success of the ‘BringITon’ events last year. Our aim in delivering these open day events is to highlight the excellent opportunities available to students and encourage them to pursue a career in ICT, while at the same time dispelling the myths and stereotypes that surround the industry. By speaking directly with representatives from the ICT sector, pupils have the chance to obtain a real insight into the profession.”
