Research Study to Determine the Skills Required to Support Potential Economic Growth in the Northern Ireland Sustainable Energy Sector

Summary:

This report provides an assessment of the skills required to support the growth of companies operating in the Sustainable Energy Sector in Northern Ireland over the next ten years. It examines four specific areas – integrated building technology, offshore energy, bio energy and energy storage. It also identifies a number of actions to sustain and improve the supply of skills in these areas including:- 1) Developing course provision for offshore / marine technicians; 2) Supporting industry in developing Sustainable Energy apprenticeship programmes; 3) Using sustainable energy to promote Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) skills; 4) Continuing to support sustainable energy specialisations by Further Education providers. This research was commissioned by DEL in September 2010 and the report was completed by Ecorys UK Ltd and published by DEL in September 2011. The Department has used the valuable information in this report to develop a Policy Framework, which will be applied in all business areas. This information will inform our support of this important and developing sector.
