Launch of the Made Not Born campaign 2010-11

Following its hugely successful inaugural year the Department for Employment and Learning (DEL) is once again encouraging Northern Ireland’s Small to Medium Enterprises (SMEs) to consider its Leadership and Management Development programme: ‘Made Not Born’ as a means of helping them to utilise talented staff and to create their own future leaders and managers. As part of the programme, companies have been invited to attend a free information roadshow starting on 29 September in the Park Avenue Hotel as well as on 30 September in the Civic & Conference Centre, Craigavon.
The 2010 / 2011 campaign and events programme was launched during a visit to locally owned cinema chain and ‘Made Not Born’ Champion, Movie House Cinemas. The group has been actively working with DEL and is currently participating on the Management: Analysis and Planning programme (MAP) and the Management Leadership and Development programme (MDLP), to ensure that its staff are given the correct leadership and management tools to help grow and strengthen its business.
Made Not Born is based on the proven concept that great leaders and managers are not born, but rather made. The campaign aims to highlight, to SMEs, the benefits of deploying simple but effective management and leadership techniques. To help illustrate these benefits, DEL has once again teamed up with some of the UK’s leading management experts, as well as local champions – each providing real life, real time examples of just how impactful these techniques can be when deployed in a business environment.
This year guest speakers will include Guy Browning, business commentator and writer, who will speak at the first two roadshow events in Belfast and Craigavon, as well as local expert Gareth Dunlop, Managing Director of internet marketing company ION, who will host a special social media masterclass in December. Speaking at the launch of the Made Not Born campaign Raymond McAuley, Deputy Principal, Management Development Branch with the Department for Employment and Learning said “We know Made Not Born is working – with more than 800 SMEs engaging with the programme since it was officially launched in 2009, to learn more about the types of benefits that management and leadership development can have on their business operations. With the current economic challenges faced by all businesses there has never been a more pressing time to maximise existing internal resources. Evidence shows that improved management and leadership activities, companies of all sizes can tap into existing resources to make them more competitive and fit for the future. The Made Not Born programme offers business owners the ideal resource from which to access vital funding, valuable training and business support.”
Mr. McAuley continued, “With Made Not Born we have put in place a flexible and multi-layered programme that can easily be deployed and integrated by an SME client. The specific training opportunities featured within Made Not Born offer a range of entry points, and each is supported by a dedicated team of professionals. ”
