WorldSkills 2011

The UK will host WorldSkills 2011 between 5th – 10th October 2011 at the Excel Exhibition and Conference Centre in London.

The UK recognises that the development of skills is fundamental to developing a strong economy and increasing employment levels and this is particularly relevant in the current economic climate. Through recent reforms to the Skills agenda, the UK Government seeks to create the best educated, best trained and best skilled country in the world.

Through the collaboration of all 4 Administrations of the UK Government, the lead in to the 2011 event will be focussed upon raising the profile of skills nationally through a series of related events and an intensive marketing campaign.

WorldSkills 2011 will form an integral part of national skills development and promotion, by providing a practical demonstration of the levels of excellence that can be achieved in vocational skills.

Northern Ireland has an excellent track record in skills competitions. At the most recent Worldskills competition which was held in Calgary in 2009 Trevor Woods won a bronze medal for joinery. Jonathan Lloyd won a bronze medal for car painting at the 2007 Worldskills competition in Japan, and in 2005 Andrew Blair won a gold medal for Autobody Repair and Christopher Robinson won a Medallion for Excellence in plumbing at Worldskills Helsinki.
