It's official.

The UK will host WorldSkills 2011 in London after beating off stiff competition from Australia and Sweden. Official delegates from the 40 different member nations of the WorldSkills organisation took part in the vote on 10th May in Melbourne.

The UK has a strong economy and world leading employment levels. To maintain this position, the UK recognises that the development of skills is fundamental. Through recent reforms to the Skills agenda, the UK Government seeks to create the best educated, best trained and best skilled country in the world.

Through the collaboration of all 4 Administrations of the UK Government, the 5 years leading up to the 2011 event will be focussed upon raising the profile of skills nationally through a series of related events and an intensive marketing campaign.

WorldSkills 2011 will form an integral part of national skills development and promotion, by providing a practical demonstration of the levels of excellence that can be achieved in vocational skills.

Northern Ireland has an excellent track record in skills competitons. Andrew Blair from Northern Ireland won the only UK gold medal at the last WorldSkills Olympics in Helsinki in 2005 for AutoBody repair. This together with past successes in skills competitions shows the high calibre contribution that Northern Ireland competitors bring to WorldSkills. Read Andrew's Interview
